Take a tour of the Mr Morezon label by downloading their free sampler

 

The Mr Morezon label has been on my radar for a number of years now.  They only release a few albums each year, but each one has its own unique qualities and makes a pretty strong impression on me.  For instance, the John Fahey-inspired recording by The Bedmakers was one of my favorite albums last year.

So, spend your Saturday digging through this free sampler and find what might become your next favorite album.

The album is retailing at Name Your Price, so take them up on their offer and put an amount of zero in the purchase amount field.  There’s nothing stopping you from sending along some cash with your purchase or, instead, if you find you’re enjoying the sampler, then circling back later to it if you’re so inclined (you can always purchase the album a second time and give money that time).

However, the best way to show your appreciation for the sampler is to buy one of the albums featured on it.  That, ultimately, is what these free samplers are meant to do… provide listeners a budget-friendly introduction to the label’s music, figuring you’ll hear something you like on it from one (or more) of the ensembles, and that’ll lead to an album purchase(s).

Take a tour of Ronin Rhythm Records by downloading their free sampler

 

Ronin Rhythm Records is most associated with founder Nik Bärtsch and his ensemble Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin.  However, it is not just some vanity label.  Over the course of thirteen years, Ronin Rhythm Records has been the launching pad for a number of different ensembles.  And while many of them do fall into that meditation at high speeds sound, it’s more of an aesthetic generalization than an catalog itemization.  So, spend your Sunday digging through this free sampler and find what might become your next favorite album.

The Wayne Horvitz free download series: “A Walk in the Rain”

 

Wayne Horvitz - "At the Reception"This week’s free Wayne Horvitz track is from his 2014 release At the Reception, which features his current working crew, The Royal Room Collective.  As I’ve mentioned in previous columns featuring Horvitz’s 52 free downloads for 52 weeks, his sound can vary dramatically from moment to moment just as it evolves over time.  In this instance, it’s a straight-ahead sound that’s warm and familiar.  Of particular interest are those compositions that were performed previously on recordings by Horvitz groups that weren’t situated so closely to Jazz center, and it’s always interesting to hear new variations and facets of well-liked tunes.   A different vision of this composition can be heard with Horvitz’s chamber ensemble, The Gravitas Quartet, on their album One Dance Alone, as well as the 2008 recording from his jazz-blues-folk group Sweeter Than the Day.

Remember, these tracks are only free for a week, typically running from Tuesday to Tuesday, so don’t wait to take advantage of the artist’s offer.

The Wayne Horvitz free download series: “An Open Letter to George Bush”

 

Wayne Horvitz - "Miracle Mile"This week’s free Wayne Horvitz track is from his 1992 release Miracle Mile, which was my introduction to his music as band leader.  As I’ve mentioned in previous columns featuring Horvitz’s 52 free downloads for 52 weeks, his sound can vary dramatically from moment to moment just as it evolves over time.  Today’s track, “An Open Letter to George Bush,” came from a time when Horvitz was adding heavy infusions of electronica to his addictive blend of folk, modern jazz and pop.  My favorite manifestations of that equation came in the form of moody, contemplative pieces that possessed an ever-present threat of volatility.  Today’s free track was one such piece, and it was a track that (thankfully) kept me coming back and checking out more of Horvitz’s work over all these years.  I’ve got a little bit of nostalgia wrapped up in today’s rec, which is part of the fun of revisiting all of these old Horvitz recordings as he rolls them out for this series.

La Resistencia: Free album track + “New Song #7” video

 

La Resistencia - Eterno RetornoHere’s a couple items from La Resistencia, whose album Eterno Retorno was the most recent This Is Jazz Today Album of the Week.

First, the album’s label, Discos Pendiente, is offering a free album track on their site (LINK).

It’s of the opening track “Autoatentado.”  And just a heads-up, it doesn’t have much meta-data attached to it, so when you search for it in your digital library, you can find it by Song title, which begins with “AUTOATENTADO.”  That should help some of you.  And if you’re still searching for the download button, it’s located at the right end of the audio player.  In any event, it’s one of several songs I’m addicted to on this excellent recording.
