Now up, the latest Best of Bandcamp Jazz recommendations for The Bandcamp Daily.  The newest monthly installment covers albums for November 2017.  There’s ten primary recommendations in total, plus some side recommendations to boot.  Because, really, ten is not enough.

Preview “The Influencing Machine” from the upcoming release by Elliot Galvin

 

Elliot Galvin has a new album coming out.  The Influencing Machine is set to be released January 26th, 2018 on Edition Records.

The inspiration for the album is the book ‘The Influencing Machine’ by Mike Jay, an historical account of the life of James Tilly-Matthews, a double agent at the time of the French civil war and first fully documented case of a paranoid schizophrenic.

Preview “Thelonious Sphere Monk,” the upcoming release from MAST

 

Multi-instrumentalist MAST has a new album on the horizon.  Thelonious Sphere Monk is getting released January 26, 2018 on World Galaxy Records (an imprint of Alpha Pup Records).  It’s an album of modern reinterpretations of Monk’s songbook, and if the rest of the album is as mesmerizing as the preview track, then you’ll have something to reach for once you’re done sifting through all of the Best of 2017 lists.

An all-star cast contributes to the album, including Chris Speed, Dan Rosenboom, Gavin Templeton, Jonah Levine, Jason Fraticelli, Brian Marsella, Makaya McCraven, and Anwar Marshall.

Oh hell yes, there’s new music from Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band

 

Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band have a new album coming out soon.  Body and Shadow is releasing November 10th on Blue Note Records.  Recorded at the Columbus Theatre in Providence, Rhode Island, their fifth album marks twenty years together for the band.  Previous recordings often vacillated between expressions of fiery intensity and sublime melodicism.  Their newest winds up tight those two qualities, and the result is a fireplace warmth that inspires cinematic imagery, moody contemplation and the occasional jolt of electricity.  Speaking as someone who is a huge fan of this ensemble, this album is leaving me very happy.

Here’s a preview of what’s to come.  “Broken Leg Days” is the album’s final track.
