Album of the Day: “LEÓN” by Michael Sarian & The Chabones
Artist: Michael Sarian & The Chabones
Album: LEÓN
Label: Zoho Music
Style: Latin jazz as world traveler
Favorite Track: “Your Words”
Music from: New York City
What I like about it: That thing where a wave curls over top of a surfer as she glides down its barrel? That’s the relationship of rhythm and melody on the latest from Michael Sarian. The melodies of LEÓN have a distinct form, but their presence is sometimes obscured by a rhythmic groove that is as hypnotic as waves crashing towards the shoreline. This complementary relationship of fluid motions is as intoxicating as the music is tuneful, and that’s what I like most about this recording.
Your album personnel: Michael Sarian (trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals, mini moog, synth), Jim Piela (alto & soprano saxophones), Evan Francis (tenor sax), Elad Cohen (trombone), Michael Verselli (piano, Nord, mini moog, synths), Trevor Brown (electric bass), Josh Bailey (drums, auxiliary percussion) and guest: Franco Pinna (bombo legüero).

Album of the Day: “Shibui” by Shibui
Artist: Shibui
Album: Shibui
Label: Self-Produced
Style: High velocity minimalism
Favorite Track: “1.2”
Music from: Boston, MA
What I like about it: The comparison to Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin is an obvious one from the very first notes. The nuanced repetitions are like following the sparkles of sunlight reflecting off the lake’s surface, and how something about their rapid emergence evolves into an hypnotic state of being. I like how marimba and glockenspiel are featured heavily and I like how an economical use of strings makes their appearance that much more stunning.
Your album personnel: Tim Doherty (bass), Bradley Goff (piano, Rhodes), Céline Ferro (clarinet, bass clarinet), Kyle Harris (drums), Derek Hayden (marimba, glockenspiel), Curtis Hartshorn (percussion, glockenspiel) and guests: Daniel Pelletier (marimba), Greg Jukes (marimba, glockenspiel), Abigale Reisman (violin), Chris Baum (violin), Dan Lay (violin), Nathan Cohen (viola) and Ben Swartz (cello).
