These are videos that I like

Today’s videos feature the music of chromatic harmonica player Hermine Deurloo.  Her new album Living Here was yesterday’s daily recommendation (go read it).

Here’s a promo video for that new album.  It gives some nice bio and background info interspersed with scenes in Amsterdam… a sort of “day in the life” video montage, which fits in nicely with the album’s theme.  It’s set to the album track “Long Story Short.”

And here’s a performance of the album track “Self Portrait” just a few months ago at Amsterdam’s Bimhuis.  It’s the same line-up as the album except that Julian Sartorius is on drums, not Jim Black.

And here’s an earlier performance at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.  In addition to Peter Tiehuis on guitar and Geert Chatrou with the whistling, they are accompanied by the Metropole Orchestra and Vincent de Kort.  They perform a medley of Toots Thielemans tunes, including the memorable theme to the movie Midnight Cowboy.

Today’s videos feature the music of saxophonist Matt Otto.  Otto’s new (and older) releases Ibérica and Reunion were yesterday’s daily recommendation (go read it).

The first video is a live July 2015 performance with Ensemble Ibérica at Grunauer, in Kansas City.  The song is “Viewed In,” which can be found on their new recording.

And our final video is from an August 2014 performance at the Take 5 Coffee Bar in Overland, Kansas.

It features saxophonist Andy Ehling, whose collaboration with Otto resulted in the new release Reunion.  The song performed is “Eleven Thirty,” which also makes an appearance on the recording.

Today’s daily videos feature the music of pianist Anne Quillier, whose new album Dusty Shelters was yesterday’s daily recommendation (go read it), as well as a January rec on my Best of Bandcamp Jazz column.

Here’s an in-studio performance of the song “Let Sleeping Dogs Lie,” a composition from her new album.

Today’s videos feature the music of trumpeter Taylor Haskins and his new project Gnosis.  His new album Gnosis was a recent daily recommendation (go read it).

First up is a performance of “The Shifting Twilight” at the 2015 Burlington Discover Jazz Festival.  I’m a big fan of a video that gets a city street into the frame, and brings the locale into the moment.

And next up is one of several videos Haskins put together as part of his Gnosis project.  More can be watched on a YouTube playlist and then there’s even more on his website.  The videos on his site are accompanied by his thoughts at the time he put it all together.

And our final video is Haskins working with cornet, and some effects and loops.  It’s nice and all, but what’s gold about this video is sharing with Haskins the view that greets him when he’s harnessing his creativity.  The window looks out at (what I assume is) the Adirondacks on his home turf of the Champlain Valley in upstate New York.
