These are videos that I like

Our next installment of videos to feature musicians who earned a slot on the Best of 2016 list come courtesy of bassist Jasper Høiby and the band Moker.

Jasper Høiby‘s Fellow Creatures earned the #13 slot on the Best Of list, and even then I’m not sure that sufficiently reflects just how good that album is.  Here’s a rendition of the album track “Folk Song” from a performance at Kings Place, London earlier this year.

The band Moker earned the #14 slot for their album Ladder.  They found countless ways to express their wild personality on that recording, and this 2013 performance of “La Resistenza” at Postival, Oostende shows that trait isn’t a new thing from the band.

Today’s videos feature musicians who earned a spot on the Best of 2016 list.

First up is Laurent Rochelle OKIDOKI Quartet.  Their album Si tu regardes earned the #6 slot on this year’s Best Of list.  You can read more about that album here on Bird is the Worm (LINK).

This April 2016 performance at the Sunset à Paris jazz club is evidence that their talents lay not just in the recording studio.

Out next video features Jon Armstrong, whose album Burnt Hibiscus earned the #2 slot on the Best of 2016 list.  You can read more about the album on Bird is the Worm (LINK).

Taken from the Burnt Hibiscus recording session, this video of the song “There They Are” focuses on vocalist (and harpist) Sheela Bringi and trumpeter Clinton Patterson.

Today’s featured videos come courtesy of Taylor Ho Bynum, whose album Enter the PlusTet was named this site’s 2016 Album of the Year.

And the first video is a mini-documentary about how the album came about…

The next video is from a May 2016 performance at Buffalo, New York’s Asbury Hall.  Bynum’s PlusTet consists of musicians he’s collaborated with in a number of settings in different combinations.  For instance, this performance brings together his sextet and his Buffalo PlusTet.

And the third video is from a previous Bynum project.  This documentary spotlights Taylor Ho Bynum’s 2014 Acoustic Bicycle Tour, a 5-week, 2000-mile performance journey in which he bicycled down the West Coast from Canada to Mexico and presented concerts along, collaborating with different musicians at each locale.  If you do nothing else, you’ll want to skip to the mark where he plays to the ocean shore.

Today’s videos feature more of the artists who earned a slot on this year’s Best of 2016 list.

The first video is a trailer from Psychic Temple for their 2016 release Plays Music for Airports.  Their rendition of Brian Eno’s classic ambient music recording earned the #8 slot on this year’s list.  It’s a brilliant concept and supremely enjoyable to hear.
