These are videos that I like

Today’s featured videos come courtesy of saxophonists Christophe Panzani and Patrick Shiroishi.

The first is a duet between Christophe Panzani and pianist Leonardo Montana.  It comes from Panzani’s latest project in which he travels to the homes of seven different pianists and performs duets with each.  This project resulted in the excellent Les Âmes Perdues, and the song “Endless Wars”

The next video is from Patrick Shiroishi, whose new album Anfinsen’s Landmark was yesterday’s daily recommendation.  Here is with a solo saxophone (and effects) performance of the song “The Soothing Thought That Spring from Human Suffering” in what appears to be a church.  The black & white film effect is pretty cool, too.

Today’s featured videos come courtesy of pianist John Chin, whose new album Fifth was included in the most recent This Is Jazz Today recommendations column.

The first video is the solo piece “Trajectory,” which is an album track on Fifth.

And here’s a brief time lapse video that Chin put together from his window during NYC’s first snowfall in 2016.  He plays Fats Waller’s “Honeysuckle Rose.”

And here’s a video of Chin and his quintet performing live at the NYC venue Smalls Jazz Club.  It’s the same personnel as on his new album.  And the venue, Smalls, has a neat subscription service that allows you to stream live shows from the comfort of your own home.  They’ve got a free membership option that only costs you an email to see the current live performance, and then some like the $10/month that gives you access to tons of archived shows.  Great musicians pass through there, so it’s something you should seriously consider doing.  Learn more (LINK).

Today’s featured video comes courtesy of the Christian Wallumrød Ensemble performing in the Studio Hall at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter.  This March 2011 performance predates his current ensemble by a number of years, but it strongly reflects his aesthetic and isn’t that far removed from an album like Kurzsam and Fulger.

Today’s featured videos come courtesy of drummer Allison Miller and two of her working groups.

In case you missed it, yesterday’s column covered three of Miller’s 2016 recordings… all of them excellent, and one in particular belonging to 2016’s best.  Be sure to check that column out (LINK).

The first video is from the Honey Ear Trio, and the song “Silent Stairs,” which can also be heard on their new album Swivel.  Oh, and lights, lots of pretty lights.

Today’s featured videos come courtesy of two artists who have put out two of the better albums we’ve heard in 2016.

The first is from Alex Puddu, whose In the Eye of the Cat used classic giallo films as inspiration.  This video, using the song “Emerald,” embodies the theme of the album.  The music itself, actually, is quite a bit of fun.

Our other featured video provides two types of scenes:  There’s a drivers window view of some small town blanketed in snow, and is accompanied by music from the latest release by the Dominique Pifarély Quartet.  The other scene is of the band performing live.  Both types of scene are seriously enjoyable.
