La Resistencia: Free album track + “New Song #7” video

 

La Resistencia - Eterno RetornoHere’s a couple items from La Resistencia, whose album Eterno Retorno was the most recent This Is Jazz Today Album of the Week.

First, the album’s label, Discos Pendiente, is offering a free album track on their site (LINK).

It’s of the opening track “Autoatentado.”  And just a heads-up, it doesn’t have much meta-data attached to it, so when you search for it in your digital library, you can find it by Song title, which begins with “AUTOATENTADO.”  That should help some of you.  And if you’re still searching for the download button, it’s located at the right end of the audio player.  In any event, it’s one of several songs I’m addicted to on this excellent recording.

These are videos that I like: Tomoko Omura – “Impressions”

 

Tomoko Omura - "Roots"Today’s featured video is from violinist Tomoko Omura, who works in some loops to perform a take on John Coltrane’s “Impressions.”  This is about as cool a video as any I’ve ever featured on the site.  I mean, it starts out just gorgeous, and then she slips in the original’s melody and the whole thing just seems to coalesce into a single vision.  So cool.

Worth noting that Omura’s last recording, Roots, received the #6 slot on this site’s Best of 2015 list.  Read more about that album here (LINK).

These are videos that I like: Spielvereinigung Sued & Malte Schiller “Night Quiet”

 

Malte Schiller "Sagen oder Nicht"Today’s featured video is a live performance from the big band Spielvereinigung Sued under the direction of composer Malte Schiller, and with trombonist Nils Wogram as the featured soloist.

It’s the song “Night Quiet” and this September 2015 show at Liepzig’s die naTo was part of the CD release tour for their new album Sagen oder Nicht.  Not coincidentally, this same album was one of the recommendations from the most recent This Is Jazz Today column.

These are videos that I like: Antoine Pierre – “Urbex”

 

Antoine Pierre - UrbexToday’s featured video is half album promo, half live performance vid from drummer Antoine Pierre.

The album is his 2016 release Urbex, which was just named Album of the Week on the latest This Is Jazz Today column.  You can read all about it here (LINK).

The live performance half of the video is from a December 2015 show at Festival Brosella in Brussels.

It’s nice to see that the raw excitement of the album translates nicely to the live show environment.  Now, about that video…

These are videos that I like: Thomas Maintz & Edward Hopper’s “Gas, 1940”

 

edward hopper gas 1940 maintzToday’s featured video is from guitarist Thomas Maintz and the painting “Gas, 1940” from Edward Hopper.  Maintz uses paintings as a vehicle for improvisation, which then may become the seeds for a new composition.  “Looking at the paintings helps me to be less analytical,” Maintz explained via correspondence.  He also said that he intends to start posting more videos like this… something that I think is pretty damn cool, so expect to see more featured videos on this site as they become available.
