These are videos that I like: Sam Sadigursky – “String of Pearls”

 

Sam Sadigursky - "Follow the Stick"Today’s featured video is from clarinetist Sam Sadigursky, who set some vintage film clips to his group’s performance of “String of Pearls,” a song taken from his excellent new release Follow the Stick.

That album, by the way, was this site’s #17 album of the year on its Best of 2015 list.  It’s got the right balance of old-school and new-school, and so often when I begin playing it, the music immediately provides that warmth and liveliness so emblematic of the 1960s Blue Note Records hard bop recordings that sit waiting on my shelf to be revisited.  Those kind of qualities are not to be undervalued.

These are videos that I like: Mario Rom’s Interzone – “Everything is Permitted”

 

Mario Rom's Interzone - "Everything Is Permitted"Today’s featured video is the first of four in a film-esque series from Mario Rom’s Interzone.  These music videos were shot in Mexico City, Texas, Louisiana and Austria and gives the impression of a plot that’s set to the trio’s music.  In total, the four videos run approximately thirty minutes in duration.  Like ’em or not, you gotta appreciate the spirit… these vids look like they took some serious effort.  Bonus, obviously, is that you get to hear their excellent music while watching.

Speaking of Mario Rom’s Interzone, their newest album Everything is Permitted, received the #24 slot on this site’s Best of 2015 list.  Read more about that album here (LINK).

These are videos that I like: Trabant Echo Orchestra – “Winter Suite Part II”

 

Here’s a neat video that incorporates the song “Part II” from Trabant Echo Orchestra‘s Winter Suite… a recent recommendation here on Bird is the Worm.

The video was put together by cinematographer Philip Fleischer.  Here’s a LINK to some other videos he has up on Vimeo (a YouTube equivalent, for those unfamiliar).

Four Birthday Candles: A Bird is the Worm site anniversary

 

BitW square avatarThere is no possible way it’s been four years since I first turned on the lights here.  No. Possible. Way.

It sure doesn’t feel like it.  Time has scooted right along, and I’m left wondering how the contrails grew so long reaching out toward the horizon line.  It’s been fun and it’s been rewarding and I love discovering cool new music and spreading word of it to anyone who walks through the front door… but damn it’s going by fast.

Each year, my anniversary and my annual January “looking ahead to the new year” posts grow shorter and shorter.  For the latter, I’ve finally succumbed to the realization that, for the time being, there’s only so much I can do with the day and the huge bundle of plans I come up with probably aren’t gonna be so simple to see through to completion.  For the former, it really just boils down to “thank you.”

Thanks to all the musicians who create this music, thanks to all the people that help get it in the spotlight and thanks to all the readers of my site for lending me your ear and eye day in and out.

I do still have plans for the upcoming months and there will be some changes, but what won’t change is my dedication to finding the best of the best out there (or anything that just sounds interesting or strange or different or “etc”) and laying down some words about it here on this site.  I’m all about bringing together listeners with the musicians who are creating new, favorite albums.

That wasn’t nearly as rambling a post as I’ve served up in past years.  Consider yourselves spared.

Here’s a video from one of my artists performing a song that appeared on one of my favorite albums of 2015.  This is Chris Lightcap’s Bigmouth and their rendition of Velvet Underground & Nico’s “All Tomorrow’s Parties” at the 2014’s NYC Winter Jazz Fest.
