Recommended: Max Frankl Quintet – “Live in Munich”

 

Guitarist Max Frankl has been a favorite of this site since first discovering his 2011 release Stories, with his trio Francis Drake.  His 2015 release Fernweh also received some warm words on Bird is the Worm.  Now, kicking off 2017, he’s releasing the three-track EP, Live In Munich.  The presence of trombonist Nils Wogram adds a wonderful sonority to the session, and the way it melts up with the gentle harmonic waves from Frankl’s electric guitar and how his trombone intertwines melodic threads with Ulrich Wangenheim’s clarinet and sax adds rich textures everywhere.  The moody opener “Feya” is heavy with emotion, as is the three-minute “Interlude.”  Final track “Sturmvogel,” on the other hand, gets the heart beating faster and takes things from a contemplative tone to something sunnier and upbeat.

Just a seriously enjoyable recording.  Everything about this live performance recording gives the indication that Frankl’s sextet was completely in sync that evening.  The dialog between musicians and the way their individual sounds coalesce into expressions fuller and richer than the sum of the individual contributions gives the impression that it was probably a magical show to see in person.

These are videos that I like: Txema Riera at the 2016 l’Estival de Jazz d’Igualada

 

Today’s featured videos come courtesy of Hammond B3 organist Txema Riera.  His new release Terror was yesterday’s daily recommendation (go read it).  That album was recorded live at the 2016 l’Estival de Jazz d’Igualada.  Here’s two videos from that concert.

Recommended: Txema Riera – “Terror”

 

There’s a wonderful presence to the debut from Hammond B3 artist Txema Riera.  It sits squarely in modern blues territory, but so many times this music possesses the atmosphere of classic soul-jazz recordings that it’s pretty easy to get nostalgic even when listening to something that clearly comes from a present-day perspective.  Performed live at Barcelona’s Estival de Jazz. , Riera is joined by guitarist Dani Pérez and drummer Roger Guitérrez, and much like their old-school counterparts, they work most of everything through the lens of the groove.

“El Pendulo” works from a Latin groove and solos at will, whereas the groove of “Oompa-Loompa” is all soul.  The patient groove of “El Secret de Judit” syncs into the melody and sways it atop waves on the cadence of a rocking sea.  A few tracks add some contrast at opposite ends of the spectrum.  Title track “Terror” jacks up the heat, and Perez’s guitar sears the melody into the surface of the song.  But from a different approach, the ethereal “Little Green Feet” sighs the melody out one lovely note at a time.

A seriously enjoyable recording, and a very promising debut.
