My August recommendations just posted on the The Bandcamp Daily, but let’s revisit some of the recordings that made previous recommendations so special.
First up is an ECM Records promo video for Awase, the latest release from Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin. The band’s personnel has changed a bit, but their hypnotic potency hasn’t diminished, nor has their dedication to groove through minimalism. Also, it’s a rare opportunity to purchase something on ECM via Bandcamp.
Next up is an in-studio video from Trio HLK. Their new album Standard Time deconstructs well-known tunes and uses a fragment of their remains to build something brand new. Saxophonist Steve Lehman and vibraphonist Evelyn Glennie make some wonderful contributions in guest roles. This is a seriously enchanting album.
And let’s wrap up with a live performance video from Peggy Lee. The cellist has been responsible for some of the most compelling music in the new millennium, concocting an intoxicating blend from the ingredients of jazz improvisation, classical music precision, folk music warmth and cinematic curiosities. Her new album Echo Painting is yet more evidence of this truth. Here’s a full performance at Vancouver’s The Ironworks back in June 2016.
